Baleal Beach

Baleal beach is located to the North of Peniche, and South of Baleal island. Baleal beach is a long stretch of beach curving around from the Peniche peninsula all the way to Baleal island and is split up into three main areas - Baleal Sul at the southern end of the beach, Maia da Baia in the middle part and Cantinho da Baia located at the Northern corner next to Baleal island. Baleal beach is often a great option to surf in Peniche as it consistently offers a clean wave somewhere along the long beach. The bay curves around with the southern and northern ends often providing protection from larger swells and the middle of the bay offering bigger waves.

All along the stretch of Baleal beach you will find a variety of waves depending on the sand banks, tide and swell direction, but the main area located at Cantinho Da Baia can generally get quite crowded with a high concentration of surf schools that are based close by so Cantinho is often the most crowded. The southern end can also get fairly crowded with beginners but usually has far less surf schools and a great option for mellow waves and good vibes. The middle of the bay (Maia Da Baia) is often a great option for your surf photography session in Peniche as there is always a perfect uncrowded spot and often you will find epic empty waves!

During summer months Baleal beach is a lifeguarded spot at the northern and southern ends and there are handy car parks situated at all three areas with free parking.

There are a few great cafe/restaurants on Baleal beach located at the Cantinho Da Baia end and you are also only a short walk from the surf shops and supermarkets of Ferrel.

  • Baleal Sul

    Baleal South - A great option for surf photography in Peniche for beginners or days when there is a large swell from the east and you want more fun sized clean waves. Baleal Sul often offers protection from big swells from the east and is a great option when the wind is too north for Cantinho Da Baia. A great option for surf photography for all levels!

  • Maia Da Baia

    Middle Of The Bay - A great option for surf photography in Baleal during the summer months when there is fun sized swells and Cantinho and Baleal Sul are too crowded with surf schools, you can choose from a number of empty sand bottom beach break peaks, escape the crowds and score some epic photos of your trip. A great option for intermediates and it can get epic with a larger swell!

  • Cantinho Da Baia

    Corner Of The Bay - The perfect spot for low level intermediates and beginners to score some fun waves with a beautiful backdrop of Baleal island perfect for your surf photography session in Peniche. There are lots of people learning to surf here during the summer but the vibe is great and the waves are consistent and super fun, as the bay curve around to Baleal island the waves get progressively mellower and produce some fun waves suitable for everyone!
